Overview and Syllabus:
Regular course in Communications Protocols and Computer Networking offerend in every winter semester. The course is a compulsory and highly recommended for English Speaking Master of Communications Engineering students as basic “a bridging course” between their earlier studies and M.Sc. level studies at RWTH. The course is covering he basics of computer networks, including the aspects of the most important protocols. It is quite similar of courses labeled as “Computer Networks” or “Data Communications” in many US and UK universities.
After the course students should have broad, basic knowledge on communications networks and major protocols hat are used in modern communications networks, and particularly in Internet. We have a strong emphasis on TCP/IP, routing, and data link layer protocols. One of the emphasis is to harmonize the basic knowledge between students coming from different study programs and universities.

Material: The course is based on Tanenbaum’s book on compuer networks (4th edition) wih some extra maerial from Kurose & Ross. There is no formal “script” (lecture notes) but we provide lecture slides, homework, and some other extra material through L2P.
Exam: Written final exam in English
Special notes:
Although the course has two hours of lectures and one hour of homework (V2Ü1), it provides only two (2) ETCS credit units.
