Ph.D. Studentships: Fall 2017 call

Institute for Networked Systems (iNETS) at the RWTH Aachen University plans to offer up to two funded Ph.D. studentships in the general area of future networking and advanced wireless networks. There might be also a possibility to provide support for one self-funded Ph.D. student, i.e. a student who would be receiving his or her living costs from other grant (possibly national grant, DAAD, or similar sources), the student would not pay any tuition fees and would still be provided support for literature, conference trips, and other research expenses by the institute.
The selected students would be working research in one of our research projects that mainly focus on

  • architectures of the future networks and protocols,
  • mm-wave communications and sensing systems.
  • cognitive radios
  • advanced analysis methods for complex (wireless) networks.

The institute focus on systems and there are ample opportunities to work either in theoretical subjects or conducting leading-edge implementation oriented experimental work, or both.
Applicant needs to have Masters degree (M.Sc.) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or Applied Physics with necessary orientation. The positions are highly competitive and successful candidates are expected to have very good academic record. Strong analytical skills are necessary, preferably combined with excellent skills on system development and/or programming.

For experimentally oriented students we particularly appreciate excellent skills in programming (C/C++) and working with experimental setups. The institute has access to world-class experimental and computational facilities, and current students work, for example with 60-90 GHz experimental radio systems, software defined radio setups including dozens of different USRP and WARP based setups, mmW-radar systems, and Terabyte data processing.

Theoretically oriented students can rely on access to excellent software tools in symbolic computing and the world-class super computing facilities.

The funding for Ph.D. position is usually initially guaranteed for 1.5 to 2 years with expectation to support teaching as an teaching assistant. Subject to the progress the position will be extended for a further 2 years until the submission of Ph.D. thesis.
The successful candidates will join a team of highly skilled researchers working in the cutting edge research projects. The ability work well in team is must as well as a strong self-motivation and willing to learn attitude. Good written and oral communication skills are expected. The working language in the institute is English and we publish all our work in top-tier journals and conferences in English. While a working knowledge of German would be a plus, we do not expect any German knowledge for these positions.
Salary is based to German TVL salary scale (offering internationally very competitive salary) and the successful candidate has a formal working contract as the university staff member, including all the standard German social security benefits. These Ph.D. studentships are free from tuition fees. There is also generous reservation of funds to travel conferences to present results. We will help the external selected candidates on finding accommodation and get adjusted in the environment.

One of the positions is available immediately. The selection process will begin upon receipt of the applications. The preference is given to applications that arrive before 15th of October.
Applicants should submit their CV, resume, research statement, and the names of at least two references to Prof. Petri Mähönen ( and principal scientist of the institute Dr. Ljiljana Simic (, who are also able to give further information. We process only the full applications packages, only the short-listed candidates will be informed about the interview.
When sending the application by email, add to the subject line “PhD-Studentships-Fall-2017”.

We are equal opportunity employer. We are especially interested in to enhance number of women in our research unit, and welcome applications from female applicants.
